She grabbed on to my shirt and took a deep breath. “But I won’t do it in my truck or in my parents’ house. ![]() “I want to make love to you so damn bad, princess,” I said in her ear. I pulled her in closer to me and just held her as we danced under the stars. I grabbed her hand and slid us down the hood. Then, I heard Jason Aldean’s “Talk” playing through my speakers. I just wanted to enjoy this time with her. “Probably because they both love Fords,” Heather said with a shrug. I let that bastard talk me into a Ford truck. “That dirty, rotten, motherfuckin’ a**hole. “Your Dodge pulled your trailer just fine! Jeff always teased you about your truck, and…” She stopped when she realized what was going on. “Wait, Jeff said I wanted to get a Ford because my Dodge was having a hard time pulling my trailer with the furniture on it.” I started to get a sick feeling in my stomach. I sat up on my elbows and looked at her, stunned. ![]()

![]() Or the part where someone talks about this dashing young man running for President, and how the country can’t be swept away by his charisma because experience is what really counts. Sound familiar? He was talking about Reagan. Like the part where Owen’s friend John, gets on a rant about how the President’s a jerk and needs to be impeached, and if he’s stupid enough to let other people tell him what to do he still needs to be impeached. I’ve already returned this book to the aunt I borrowed it from, but there were some great quotes in there that made me, a relative newcomer to any knowledge of politics, realize how little things actually change. But even that got explained to my satisfaction. There was one section where he seemed to act like a jerk, and he almost lost me. ![]() John Irving did a great job of tying up all the seemingly disparate threads at the end. But once I got to the end, I realized that everything was essential, even what I thought were tangents. ![]() It was finally about 100 pages longer than my attention span for the story. The book just seemed to get longer and longer. This came awfully close to being a 3 star read for me. But Owen has faith that God made him the way he is because he has a Higher Purpose to fulfill. Almost freakishly small, and with a terrible voice, he is huge on faith, but not so crazy about religion. ![]() ![]() ![]() Friendship isn’t just “ the leavening in our lives” it evolved because it has a direct bearing on our mental and physical health. ![]() For centuries, Denworth notes in “Friendship: The Evolution, Biology, and Extraordinary Power of Life’s Fundamental Bond,” our desire to make friends “was considered purely cultural, an invention of human society - and modern human society at that.”īut Denworth marshals new evidence that in friendship, as in so many areas, we’re not all that different from our primate forebears. Among these gregarious macaques, cliques, best-friend pairs, and social climbers are all much in evidence, giving scientists a close look at the primate origins of our drive to affiliate.Īs science journalist Lydia Denworth visited places like Cayo, she grew convinced that humans’ social connectedness was far more deep-rooted, and far more biological, than experts had long assumed. ![]() Yet this palm-fringed haven - home to about 1,000 rhesus macaques-can feel strangely similar to a weekend watering hole or middle-school cafeteria. O n the Puerto Rican island of Cayo Santiago, it’s the monkeys, not the humans, who are in charge. ![]() ![]() ![]() This tension paces a novel that contains many compelling, sometimes gritty, elements-shopping, gambling, fair-going, romance, a knife-fight and even a scary fire. Themes explored in AYA Life In Yop City include friendships, unplanned pregnancies, family, social issues, feminism, class, and gender roles. This vibrancy and the warm colors of the illustrations merge well with the energetic, and at times, funny writing that bring the story to life. From Publishers WeeklyThe next in McCaffrey's popular Saga of the Talents series (Pegasus in Flight, To Ride Pegasus), this novel follows the adventures of a group of psychically gifted scientists who nobly improve Earth's future by making space exploration and colonization possible. Meanwhile, kidnappers prey on children for pederastic pursuits and for spare parts. Meanwhile two youngsters are found to be unusually Talented: Peter Reidinger overcomes paralysis to develop the first gestalt with electrical generators (this becomes the basis for future space travel), while Tirlap, an illegal child from the vertical slums, facilitates communication among a wide variety of cultures. Telepath Rhyssa Owen, a top official of the Center for Parapsychic Talents, must contend with the station's construction manager, who treats Talents brutally and otherwise discourages them from working for her. Essential to the construction of a space station being built to serve as springboard to the stars are the services of the Talents-particularly the telekinetics, who can move objects by mental power. ![]() Even with officially mandated birth control, the world teems with too many people. Following the events in To Ride, Pegasus and set a generation or so before The Rowan, this era finds mankind not yet having settled planets outside the solar system. McCaffrey continues to develop her future world in which psionic Talents, once feared and despised, are by now necessary to the comfort and conduct of society. ![]() ![]() ![]()
